Freddie’s eyes, on the other hand, darted everywhere, his pupils blown, his mouth open in an awed expression. “It’s all so beautiful. So…beautiful. I love every single person in this room. I feel like I know them, like I’ve always known them. Ever since I was a tiny baby, maybe even before then, when I was only stardust, I knew them. And I loved them.”
Trying not to laugh, Sunny held her hand up in front of his face so he could touch it. His fingers ran over the lines of her palm, up and down the peaks and valleys of her fingers. She remembered enjoying this sort of thing when she’d been in his condition.
His fingers slid in between hers, grasping and drawing her to him. “Dance with me.”
She straightened his mask and placed her hand onto his shoulder.
“You are breathtaking, Sunny,” he told her. “And so considerate and funny and brilliant. I think we were meant to meet. There is a gravity between us.” He pulled her flush against him. “Can you feel it?”
She knew he was rolling, but she found his sincerity difficult to ignore. She could feel it, this force drawing her to him. What was more, she was beginning to realize that she was powerless against it. Because here, in this crowded ballroom, against every single one of her better judgments, she closed her eyes, and she let him kiss her. Not only that, she kissed him back, slipping her fingers into his hair as his arms wrapped tightly around her waist.
This was bliss, right now, enveloped so completely in his arms. No pharmaceutical enhancement was required. This was true bliss.
